Unit 7 -- Paradise Now Petition for Removal

I do not agree with the petition to have Paradise Now removed as a nominee for an Academy Award, but not because I agree with its content. In the United States, we pride ourselves on the right to freedom of expression, and to limit the expressed views of the filmmakers would be wrong. I do, however, believe in the rights of the petitioners on both sides to submit their concerns.

Anita, I totally agree with you that's why it was such an internal struggle for me after reading both petition. After the debate though I still couldn't help sympathizing with the protesters.

Keep in mind that the 2nd Amendment, which guarantees our freedom of speech is a law that ONLY limits the power of GOVERNMENT to limit what we say -- it does nothing to limit the right of other groups or organizations can do to limit speech.

On a BLOG like this, for example, GOOGLE could legally come in and shut down this discussion, and our only recourse would be to take our "business" elsewhere.

That said, I agree that we should be free to speak out on these points, and we should be able to see and hear alternative viewpoints. Stiffling the other viewpoints, as one of the petitions attempted to do, is fundamentally wrong -- but not illegal (or, in the US, Unconstitutional.)
